Professor Ian Bateman OBE

Professor of Environmental Economics, Director of the Land, Environment, Economics and Policy Institute (LEEP) and Director of the NetZeroPlus Project

Ian is a distinguished Professor of Environmental Economics and Co-Director of the Land, Environment, Economics and Policy Institute (LEEP), who has advised seven former UK Environment Secretaries and the Scottish Government on their climate targets and environmental policies.

 

Amongst his many accolades, Ian was formerly a member of the Natural Capital Committee, the Defra Science Advisory Council and Member of the Board of Directors of the UK Joint Nature Conservation Committee.

 

As Director of the recently concluded South West Partnership for Environment and Economic Prosperity (SWEEP) Ian oversaw the delivery of £35 million in natural capital benefits to the region. Ian is now Director of the NetZeroPlus project, a greenhouse gas removal demonstrator, focusing on increasing the carbon stored in the UK’s treescapes, exploring ‘the right tree in the right place & the right places for the right trees’.
