Exeter work informed major UK climate adaptation report

Analysis led by the University of Exeter informed a major new UK government report on climate adaptation.

The third National Adaptation Programme (NAP3) sets the actions that government and others will take to adapt to the challenges of climate change in the UK.

The report forms part of the five-year cycle of requirements laid down in the Climate Change Act 2008.

NAP3 was informed by the 3rd Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA3), which was laid before Parliament in January 2022.

CCRA3 drew on the Independent Assessment of UK Climate Risk, including a report from the Climate Change Committee and a comprehensive Technical Report written by a consortium of experts led by Professor Richard Betts MBE, of the University of Exeter and the Met Office.

“It’s good to see the NAP3 report released, so we can see what the government’s plans and priorities are for climate change adaptation,” said Professor Betts, part of Exeter’s Global Systems Institute.

“Our work on the CCRA3 Technical Report provided a solid evidence base for adaptation planning, and it’s clear that a lot of urgent work is needed to keep the UK resilient to climate change.

“The sooner we start in earnest, the better prepared we will be.”

Professor Lisa Roberts, Vice Chancellor of the University of Exeter, said: Professor Lisa Roberts, Vice Chancellor of the University of Exeter, said: “One of the core priorities in our Strategy 2030 is to lead meaningful action against the climate emergency and ecological crisis.

“The University of Exeter is taking a leading role by providing the scientific basis for reports such as the National Adaptation Programme, and the work of our researchers is enabling policymakers to make evidence-based decisions in our quest for a greener future.”

The University of Exeter has more than 1,500 staff working on all aspects of the environment and climate emergency.

Last month, the University launched Green Futures Solutions, a new business support initiative to help companies reach net zero, make smarter use of natural resources and seize opportunities in the growing green economy.
